The history of the wakizashi

Originally, the wakizashi was worn exclusively by the Samurai classes. The Japanese empire had a feudal class system in which everyone had their role. The wakizashi was a very popular samurai weapon. It was, among other things, better suited than the katana for use inside buildings. Wakizashis can have different lengths. The wakizashi that is closer to the length of a katana is called an ō-wakizashi. The wakizashi that is closer to the length of a tanto is called a kō-wakizashi. Often the wakizashi was worn together with the katana. In later times, the wakizashi increasingly replaced the tanto.
