HEMA swords

Steel swords for HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) are specially designed to safely and realistically train historical combat techniques. These swords differ significantly from decorative or sharpened variants: a HEMA-sword must be perfectly balanced, flexible enough to absorb blows, and sturdy enough to withstand intensive sparring. The blade usually has a rounded tip and a blunted edge, so techniques can be practiced with minimal risk’s.

HEMA swords come in various forms, including longswords, single-handed swords, messers, and federschwerter. The federschwert is currently the most popular for sparring and tournaments. Thanks to the narrow blade, long ricasso, and broad shoulders, the feder combines safety with an authentic feel that closely resembles a medieval battle sword. For historical technical work or solo drills, many fighters opt for a steel blunt with realistic geometry.

The material used plays an important role. Many modern HEMA swords are forged from high-quality carbon steel, materials renowned for their resilience, durability, and excellent elasticity. This allows the sword to flex during contact and return to its original shape without permanent deformation.

A good HEMA-sword feels light, responsive, and reliable, allowing you to accurately perform techniques from historical combat manuals (Fechtbücher). In our webshop, you will find high-quality HEMA training swords from reputable brands, suitable for beginners, advanced practitioners, and tournament fighters. Each model is designed with attention to safety, balance, and historical authenticity.

More about the Federschwert

The federschwert is the iconic practice sword from the German Renaissance and the precursor of modern HEMA training swords. This feder sword was used from the 16th century in Fechtschulen and is known for its thin, flexible blade, large ricasso, and heavy pommel, giving it the same weight and balance point as a real longsword. The federschwert was designed exclusively for training and dueling techniques and is frequently found in historical combat manuals by Joachim Meyer, among others. Contemporary HEMA practitioners use modern feder variants with safe rounded tips, various pommel shapes, and different flexibility levels for sparring and competitions. This ensures that the federschwert remains an essential and reliable training weapon for anyone wishing to realistically practice historical European swordsmanship.
