Product description

Viking swords were derived from the German types of spathae, swords from the Iron Age. They were quite long, had a solid protection and a strong blade. It is presumed that they are the predecessors of the later knight swords and they were bought all over Europe. A Viking sword generally had a wavy pommel with three lobes, long straight edges, a wide fuller and a short grip. The sword was short, probably for a better speed. A lot of Viking swords were decorated with inscriptions or images.

The original of this Viking sword had a double cutting edge. Presumably it was derived from the Celtic and Roman cavalry swords. The sword would not only have served as a sword for battle, but also to directly reveal the status of the wearer. When the Roman Empire collapsed the Germanic and Frankish aristocracy adopted the designs of the Iron Age sword the spatha. Swords were decorated less and the cross-guard became wider. However the pommel continued to be decorated, swords around this period were not made for balance and that offered the artist the possibility to apply various decorations on the pommel.

This Viking sword weighs approx. 1,5 kg. Its length is 85 cm, the blade is 68 cm and the cross-guard is 10,5 cm.

This sword is a Petersen type T.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.

Please note. After finishing the product yourself, the warranty and return right expire. Celtic WebMerchant is not responsible for the obtained result.
