Product description

This beautiful Viking sword is based on an original sword that was part of the great grave find at Vestre Berg in Loiten/Loten, Norway. According to reports, the grave was discovered in 1887 during deforestation work among some rocks. A special feature of the original, which dates from the 10th century, is the presumably ritually curved blade in an "S" shape. It is not known whether this ritual was intended to symbolically "kill" the sword before burial, or to deter grave robbers. The sword, classified as Type O according to the Petersen typology for Viking swords, is now in the collection of the Kulturhistorisk Museum (formerly Universitetets Oldsaksamling) in Oslo, Norway. The replica has a wide semi-sharp blade with a wide fuller. The hilt consists of a grip wrapped in red leather, a short crossguard slightly curved towards the blade, and a generously shaped pommel with five lobes. The crossguard and pommel, both made of bronze, are engraved with the patterns and motifs that also decorate the original. This Viking sword comes with a red wooden/leather scabbard with bronze scabbard fittings, and a sword belt with bronze fittings.
