Product description
The hangeroc was worn from the 8th century and is a characteristic part of Viking women's attire. The hangeroc is likely an evolution of the peplos-like dresses worn by the Germans up until the 8th century AD. It was worn with shield brooches. The shield brooch primarily served to close the hangeroc but was also used to attach other jewelry and important everyday items. Between the two brooches, metal chains or strings with beads were often worn. It is likely that most Viking women wore shield brooches, and these were not necessarily status symbols. The status was more in the other jewelry the women wore, whether attached to or combined with the brooches. The quality and craftsmanship of the shield brooches also played a role in the social status of the wearer. Furthermore, they were worn by married women and not by children or young women.
This hangeroc is made of 100% wool woven in diamond twill and is perfect for Viking reenactment.
