Product description
Umbos like these were mounted on the Roman scutum and were sometimes made of brass and sometimes of bronze. Fully round umbones were also used. Umbos were designed to deflect enemy blows while also providing space for gripping the shield. Besides their practical function, they could also serve a decorative purpose in some cases.
This replica umbo is the perfect accessory for ambitious re-enactors looking to build their own Roman shield. It is ideal as a replacement or spare part for a scutum, but of course, it is also well-suited for other DIY shield projects. This umbo is made of steel, blackened on the reverse side, and features eight pre-drilled holes for secure attachment to your shield. The necessary mounting hardware (screws with domed brass caps) is included.
