Product description

This fascinating pilgrimage badge is inspired by a medieval artifact discovered in the Dutch diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch, dating from 1375–1425 AD. Obscene-erotic badges were particularly popular in the late Middle Ages across Northern Europe, especially in the Netherlands, where they were often used for entertainment during carnival festivities. The design, known as the "Phallus Coronation," features a female figure placing a crown on a phallus equipped with a walking stick and a pilgrim’s bag, symbolizing a humorous take on pilgrimage.

The badge is crafted from silver-plated bronze and includes an eyelet on the back, allowing it to be worn as a pendant or attached to clothing. Measuring 2.9 x 2.4 cm, it matches the size of the historical original.

Obscene-erotic badges like the "Phallus Coronation" belong to a subgroup of profane pilgrimage signs. These often featured playful depictions of phallic trees, personified genitalia, or winged phalli with legs or bells, alongside winged or anthropomorphic vulvas. These badges likely served as comedic tools to diffuse taboos surrounding sexuality, acting as joking love tokens or conversation starters, particularly during the lively and uninhibited carnival season.
