Product description

This pilgrimage badge depicts a procession of three phalli carrying a crowned vulva and is inspired by a late medieval original dating from 1375–1450 AD. The historical model was discovered in Bruges, Belgium, and is part of the Van Beuningen family collection. Crafted from high-quality silvered bronze.

The badge features a broad pin on the back, similar to the medieval originals, allowing it to be attached to clothing in the traditional manner. Additionally, an eyelet on the back enables it to be worn as a pendant around the neck. Measuring 5 x 3.8 cm, this versatile piece combines historical authenticity with modern functionality.

The phallus procession represents a mocking or satirical portrayal of a relic procession, a theme also found in the marginal decorations of 14th-century medieval manuscripts where animals humorously take on human roles. The crowned vulva in this design parodies the Virgin Mary and serves as a crude reference to "Vrouw Minne," the Middle Dutch equivalent of Venus, blending religious satire with bawdy humor.
