Product description

This pendant is inspired by a medieval aquamanile from the late Middle Ages, depicting the popular story of Aristotle and Phyllis, which was often used for amusement during that time. The pendant portrays the philosopher Aristotle and his lover Phyllis, who is sitting on him and playfully tapping his backside while being carried through the garden. The historical model for this piece is a 14th to 15th-century aquamanile currently held by the MET in New York.

The pendant measures 3.5 x 3.2 x 1 cm. It is available in high-quality bronze. This humorous and provocative pendant makes a perfect gift for engagements or medieval-themed weddings.

The story of Aristotle and Phyllis became popular in the 13th century and was a common motif in medieval art, literature, and everyday items. It depicts the wise philosopher who is outwitted and humiliated by the beautiful Phyllis. The tale, which involves Aristotle being tricked into carrying Phyllis around the garden on his back, was a symbol of the folly of men in the face of cunning women. The motif spread widely across Europe during the Crusades and remained a popular theme throughout the medieval period.
