Product description

A houppelande (or houpelande) was a loose-fitting, long outer garment with wide, flared sleeves worn by both men and women in Europe during the late Middle Ages. The inside was often lined with fur. This garment later became popular among professional groups and survived in the Western world as the familiar academic and legal gowns. At that time, men always wore the houppelande over a doublet .

The houppelande appeared around 1360 and remained fashionable well into the next century. The garment had its origins in the herigaut , a similar 13th-century garment with hanging sleeves. The edges of the houppelande were often decorated by cutting them into decorative shapes, such as scalloped patterns, crenellations, or even leaf shapes.

This woolen houppelande is perfect for medieval reenactment.
