Dulling the shine of synthetic hair
Synthetic wigs can be a bit too shiny to look realistic. There are a few different ways to dull the wig for a more realistic look.
One of the most simple ways to make a wig less shiny is by using dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is a spray containing a powdery substance, meant to remove grease from human hair. This powdery substance is also quite effective at removing shine from synthetic hair. One downside is that dry shampoo can also dull the colour of the wig. The powder in the spray can leave a white sheen on the hair, but this can be lessened by rubbing in the dry shampoo. This varies greatly per brand and even type of dry shampoo, so this might need some experimenting to find the best option for you.
You can just spray the dry shampoo evenly over your wig and gently comb it through. Depending on how shiny your wig is, you might need to work your way through the wig layer by layer.
Baby powder basically works the same way as dry shampoo, you only need to apply it differently. You can either dab the baby powder on using your hands or by using a makeup powder brush. Like with dry shampoo, you can only apply it on the top layer, or throughout the different layers of the wig.
Don’t use other types of powder as those will leave a white sheen on your wig.
Another popular method to remove shine from synthetic hair is by using fabric softener. Add a tablespoon of fabric softener to a basin of lukewarm water. Let the wig soak for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse the wig with clear, cool water and squeeze out the excess water. Let the wig dry and it should be less shiny than before.
