Product description
The Viking kaftan was a popular garment during the early Middle Ages and was especially worn in colder Scandinavian regions. This long, typically woolen garment provided warmth and protection against the harsh climate, particularly in areas with severe winters. The kaftan often had a loose, straight cut that could be easily worn over other clothing, such as the tunic and trousers that formed the basis of Viking attire.
The design of the Viking kaftan could vary widely depending on the region and the wearer’s wealth. Higher social classes, such as warlords or chieftains, often wore richly decorated kaftans with embroidery, colored fabrics, and sometimes fur trim at the collar, sleeves, or hem. These decorations were not only symbols of wealth but also signs of status within the community. Archaeological finds show that the buttons and fastenings on Viking kaftans were often made of metal and featured detailed motifs, such as animals and mythical symbols important to Viking culture. The kaftan also offered freedom of movement, which was essential for warriors and traders who traveled extensively.
This kaftan is fit for jarls! The outer seams are trimmed by hand with real rabbit fur, inspired by early medieval sources. This gives the kaftan a particularly noble appearance. The front can be closed with a row of five decorative buttons, and its roomy cut makes it suitable for wearing over early medieval attire. This kaftan is ideal for portraying people of higher social standing or those from colder regions.
