The history of Wakizashi swords
Originally, the wakizashi was used exclusively by the Japanese Samurai. The Japanese Empire had a feudal society where everyone lived in their own social class. The wakizashi was a very popular samurai sword. It was more suitable than the katana to use in buildings. Wakizashis can be of different lengths. The wakizashi that is closer to the length of a katana is called a ō-wakizashi. The wakizashi that comes closer to the length of a tanto is called a kō-wakizashi. Often the wakizashi was used together with the katana. In later centuries, the wakizashi gradually replaced the tanto.
