In Greek mythology, there were many myths about the Amazons. Fierce, female warriors, who lived in their own land, under the rule of an Amazon queen. A society in which there was no place for men.
Nowadays, there are a much larger variety of Amazon warriors, although they’re still all female. Famous pop culture characters have been based on this concept of great, independent female warriors, such as Xena and Wonder Woman.
For this blog, we’ve come up with two Amazon inspired looks of our own.
Look 1
For the first look, we’ve decided to go for a youthful amazon woman, but no less fierce. She’s training her skills in her Amazonian home land.
Dress
The white dress emphasized the youthfulness of the Amazon. However, the hours she’s spent training and developing her skills can be seen in how dirty and weathered her dress is.

Belt
Because there are a lot of different depictions of Amazons in modern times, nearly every type of weapons or fighting style can be associated with these female warriors. In the original Greek myths, they were often skilled archers. This is also the weapon we used in our depiction. To always have her arrows in reach, our Amazon wears her quiver on her belt. This belt needs to be able to carry the weight of the quiver and arrows and therefore is a wider, leather belt.

Bow
Different types of bows were used in different cultures and ages. The type of bow also was often based on the exact use of the bow. Horsebows originate in the Central Asian Steppe, where the bow was an important tool for the nomadic hunter-gatherers to control herds and large areas of land. The horsebow is both effective in hunting and in battle, as it’s very easy to use while on horseback. Amazons were known hunters, horse riders and warriors, which makes the horse bow a perfect weapon for an Amazon.

Bow glove
Pulling a bow string takes a decent amount of strength and can damage the skin of the hand and fingers. For this reason, archers in many cultures and throughout the ages have worn a leather glove on their “pulling” hand. A right handed archer will pull the bow string with their left hand and thus wear the glove on their left side. For left handed archers, this goes vice versa.

Look 2
The second Amazon inspired look is a more mature and sexy look.
Amazons have been depicted in different ways throughout history. In ancient Greece, they often wore the same clothing as male warriors, but at the same time, they were often shown with one breast uncovered. In later art styles, their looks varied from dressed in thinner, more flowy versions of the Greek warrior attire, to naked. And in modern pop culture, Amazons regularly are dressed in sexy or revealing outfits. Opinions on these depictions vary from person to person, but we did want to play into the sexy image of the Amazon a little bit.
Hangeroc
The hangeroc is traditionally a viking garment and meant to be worn over a basic, long dress. As with many clothing items, there was some variety in the exact shape and construction, with some having closed sides, while others had (partially) open sides.
The version we used for our Amazonian look has open sides, tied closed with a few straps. This creates a more sexy look when worn without an underdress.

Belt
In the first look, the quiver was worn on the belt, which isn’t the case in the second look. Still, a belt is a great addition to a look such as this one. Belts are a great way to break up a larger amount of fabric in a dress or tunic. It also makes sure a hangeroc without underdress won’t move around too much and ends up becoming a bit too sexy.
The green belt has multiple rings on it, which makes it very easy to hang equipment and such on the belt, if needed.
