Product description

New from Red Dragon (known for their high-quality HEMA synthetic training swords) is this line of high-level historical replica swords. These swords come with a leather scabbard and are made from high-quality steel with excellent hardness, making them suitable for intensive training.

The Ballinderry Sword is an iron Viking sword, discovered in 1928 in a bog at the site of a crannog (a lake dwelling) in Ballinderry, County Westmeath, Ireland. The sword was found along with other Viking artifacts, including a longbow, two spearheads, an axe, and a gaming board. The settlement dates from the late 9th to early 11th century, and the finds suggest the presence of a wealthy Irish farmer or a local ruler. The original sword features a wide 79 cm blade, typical of Viking swords, and bears the inscription ULFBERHT, a quality mark from the Rhineland. The hilt and pommel, decorated with silver details and intricate patterns, were crafted by Vikings, while the blade was imported.

This sword demonstrates that the Irish had to improve their weaponry to combat the Vikings, and Viking-style weapons gave them a strategic advantage in combat against other Irish warriors. It illustrates the broader influence the Vikings had on Irish society. The Ballinderry Sword has been exceptionally well-preserved and is on display at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

This sword is based on the Ballinderry Sword and features a brass guard and pommel with the same decorations as the original. It comes with a wooden scabbard wrapped in brown leather and a brown leather grip. The edge is 1.75 mm thick. The blade is tempered and crafted from EN42J spring steel. It has a core hardness of 45 HRC, while the edge reaches 50 HRC. Thanks to these two different hardness levels, the sword is both flexible and less brittle than comparable models. This sword is a perfect blend of expert craftsmanship and years of HEMA experience.

Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your weapons regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper. Remove burrs with a whetstone. Make sure you have removed all burrs before using a battle-ready weapon, as they can cause wounds.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.
