Product description

The cinquedea is a distinctive Italian weapon, characterized by its broad-bladed design, functioning as either a large dagger or a short sword. This particular example, housed in the Royal Armouries, dates to approximately 1500-1530 and features a longer blade than typical cinquedea. While often carried as civilian sidearms and sometimes adorned with elaborate decorations, this version is relatively plain and functional. It was likely used as a military sidearm, suitable for an infantryman or gunner.

The blade measures 66 cm in length and is exceptionally wide, transitioning from three fullers to two in a complex design. Its thin, distally tapered cross-section ensures that, despite its size, the weapon is remarkably light and quick. This replica meticulously reproduces all aspects of the original, including the unique hilt construction. The innovative guard design is crafted from multiple components welded together, replicating the original manufacturing process. The heel of the blade extends through the guard and is riveted to it, with the rivet heads and blade heel ground flush and polished for strength and durability. The blade features a full tang, with hardwood grip scales secured by brass filigree inlaid rivets.

The sheath is crafted with a wooden core wrapped in leather. Its tip is reinforced by a brass chape with intricate cut-outs and an acorn-shaped tip. At the throat, the leather rises to cover part of the guard near the ricasso. Manufactured by Windlass Steelcrafts, the original is part of the Royal Armouries Collection (Object Number IX.148).

Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your weapons regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper. Remove burrs with a whetstone. Make sure you have removed all burrs before using a battle-ready weapon, as they can cause wounds.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.

Please note. After finishing the product yourself, the warranty and return right expire. Celtic WebMerchant is not responsible for the obtained result."
